Another
project for training and employment generation for women belonging
to weaker section of the society through carpet weaving has been
sanctioned by the Department of Women and Child Development, Ministry
of Human Resource Development, Government of India on 31-3-1999
for implementation in 3 years time, beginning this year. Six districts
of this state namely, Sirmour, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Kangra and
Lahaul-Spiti have been selected for coverage under the projects.
2500 beneficiaries belonging to 100 women weavers co-operative
societies shall be imparted training for carpet weaving. The duration
of training has been fixed at 9 months and the trainees would
be paid a stipend of Rs.250 per month.
Total financial outlay of this project shall be Rs.2.07 crores
and the yearwise financial and physical targets are shall be as

Five training centres in Lahaul & Spiti District have been
already started and formalities for starting such training centres
in other districts are being completed. Efforts are also being
made for making marketing tie-ups for exporting/ marketing the
carpets to be manufactured under the projects. This would enable
the society to provide gainful employment to the women beneficiaries.
